Portrait of Eugen Czernin

František Tkadlík

František Tkadlík - Portrait of Eugen Czernin
The Portrait of Eugen Czernin, which is first in Tkadlík’s series of Czernin family portraits, was made in 1819. This was again a primarily representative portrait, but in comparison with the portraits of the Srdínkos, which are closest from the perspective of time, it is not lacking in elegance of shape and form, which is reflected in the soft folds of the cloak and in the gesture of the figure. In this portrait, the artist again refrained from using any attributes, and the social status of the portrayed subject is expressed in the overall sophistication of the depiction. It is also possible to see a certain similarity in the composition to the painted portrait of Eugen’s father, Jan Rudolf Czernin, which was made in 1804 by Giovanni Battista Lampi.
