Cutting Grass

Throughout the 1880s and 1890s Brožík again and again, in numerous variants, recorded on canvas the villagers' early-morning departure for work and their return in the evening, their labour in the fields and meadows, their midday and evening rest. In tens of small studies and larger pictures he produced modern plein-air paintings, akin to his contemporary Antonín Chittussi and to the much younger Antonín Slavíček.
