Wine-Cellar in a Cistercian Monastery

Ludvík Kohl

Ludvík Kohl - Wine-Cellar in a Cistercian Monastery
In his many paintings of castle and monastery halls, cloisters and castle cellars Kohl depicted the monumental nature of old buildings, combining Neo-Classicist elements with Early Romanticism's interest in an idealized knightly Gothic, an interest that since the mid-18th century spread from England and influenced European literature and art. The scene with its still-life of barrels, hoops and cans has an authentic ring, its colour scheme reminiscent of old masters.
