Uhlans in the Snow

Mikoláš Aleš

Mikoláš Aleš - Uhlans in the Snow
Aleš was particularly fond of military motifs. In the picture Uhlans in the Snow he painted a detachment of the Austrian light cavalry in the 1871 regulation winter uniforms. Aleš dressed them in pale-blue jackets, on their heads Polish caps with a red crown, the so-called Tartar caps. As late as the beginning of the first world war Austrian uhlans fought in similar uniforms.
