Motif from Pardubice

Adolf Kosárek

Adolf Kosárek - Motif from Pardubice
Kosárek painted this Motif from Pardubice after three years at the Academy. For the first time he opened a wide plain with a distant horizon and high sky, occupying almost the entire upper half of the picture. In the background we see the mountain Kunětická hora with its castle ruins - dark storm clouds are gathering overhead, while in the distance it rains. Two pilgrims are hurrying along the road winding through the central part of the picture. Pilgrims stood as symbols of one of the main ideas of Romanticism. A Romantic artist criss-crossing the country on his wanderings was a typical aimless pilgrim, guided solely by a Rousseauean longing for nature.
