Herd in Ruins

Johann Anton Eismann

Johann Anton Eismann - Herd in Ruins
The canvas entitled Herd in the Ruins initially from Thun collection in Děčín follows the works of Salvatore Rosa, including the vista of a stone arch in the ruins. The slightly undulating landscape reveals resting groups of cattle with shepherds. The ruins of the architecture in Eismann’s canvas may refer to the Colosseum in Rome. Eismann might have adopted the stylized form of the ruins from, for example, the work of Nicolas Berchem or Abraham Jansz. Begeyn spread by prints.
