Standing Figure II

Zdeněk Palcr

Zdeněk Palcr - Standing Figure II
After his early cubistic sculptures, Zdeněk Palcr continuously simplified his sculptural expression in the 1960s; he reduced the mass of the human figure to a flattened volume and shifted to free geometric forms. He gradually removed any traces of bodily forms from his frontally situated figures to achieve an abstracted form of flat stelas with a longitudinal base and an arch at the end, or with a profile bent or curved in different ways. In spite of this stylization into vertical sculpted attributes with a meticulously and dynamically treated surface, one can perceive their figural basis.
