Agostino Carracci - engraver, Paolo Veronese - inventor - The Crucifixion
A painting by Veronese commissioned for the Garzoni family chapel in the San Sebastiano Church served as the model for this print. The two artists probably met and became friends when Carracci stayed in Venice in 1582. A number of Agostino’s prints done after paintings by Paolo Veronese betray the close contact that existed between the two artists. While the engraving is not actually dated, its dating is based on the name of Orazio Bertelli, a Venetian publisher, written on the left under the cross.
