Scenes of peasant life had had a long tradition in the Netherlands and was a highly popular genre well into the 17th century. The genre scenes were often presented in a satirical tone that bordered on caricature. The scene shows a humble household and what was considered a comic motif of a lousing woman. The man standing by her side and examining the contents of the jug represents a typical figure of a drunkard.
