Marcantonio Raimondi - engraver, Raffael - inventor - The Vision of St Helen
St Helen, mother of the Emperor Constantine, was a big promoter of Christianity. Legend says that she discovered in the Holy Land the cross on which Christ was crucified. The scene presents her in dream in which angels with the cross revealed where to search for it. The subtle hatching creates here a silvery tinge and contributes to evocation of a dreamy atmosphere. Raphael's original drawing is in the Uffizi collections in Florence.
