Wenceslaus Hollar, Wenceslaus Hollar - inventor - View of Albury
The countryside around Albury belonged to the estates owned by Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel and Surrey, who is said to have been very fond of the landscape. Clearly, Hollar also appreciated its charm and depicted it on several occasions. The peaceful company strolling along a path illustrates the atmosphere prevalent in England in those days, which Hollar could only reminisce about during his preparation of this etched plate, when he published a series of views of Albury and Surrey that also comprised this etching. The etching from the series of landscapes around Albury conveys the peaceful atmosphere of the place.
