A glimpse of Gibraltar can be seen in the left background. After the British had come to realize that Tangier was a profoundly troubled place, they decided to pull out. On their departure in 1683, they destroyed everything they had built. However, the idea of securing a strategic point in the area remained alive and eventually the plan was realized on a site located further to the east: the Gibraltar peninsula.
