Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen - engaver, William Hogarth - inventor - Illustration for the Göttinger Taschenkalender
In German-speaking countries, the understanding of Hogarth was mediated by Georg Christoph Lichtenberg. A professor at the University of Göttingen, Lichteberg published descriptions and interpretations of Hogarth’s work in the Göttingen Pocket Calendar. The accompanying illustrations were executed by Ernst Riepenhausen, an engraver of reproductions working for the university. Numbering a total of eighty nine scaled-down reproductions, these prints considerably brought down the asking price and thus helped to spread awareness of Hogarth’s oeuvre.
