Tethered Dog, from the Various Animals series

Simon de Vlieger - Tethered Dog, from the Various Animals series
Domestic animals were frequently depicted in graphic art. De Vlieger’s print indicates the artist’s intimate acquaintance with the dog’s behaviour and anatomy; the animal looks very much alive. The dog sniffs the scents around him, but he is chained to the kennel. A similar sense of sadness is evoked in the renderings of tethered horses in that same series of prints.
