Portrait of a Young Woman with Her Hair Pinned Up

Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, was an art collector and a true connoisseur of art (which is not always the same). He was thus able to appreciate the importance of the work of Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) and strove to acquire Dürer's works for his collections. Hollar transformed this portrait of a woman with her hair done up, now preserved in Berlin, into an etched plate and presented it as a gift to the wife of his patron, Countess Alathea Talbot. Alathea Talbot was herself a prominent art collector and connoisseur. She had a special penchant for porcelain and other arts and crafts.
