Anonymous artist - Miniature altarpiece with the flaming protective deity Fudō Myōō
This small altarpiece bears the awesome King of Magic Fudō Myōō (Acalanātha) with a flaming aura, holding a lasso and a flaming sword. He is accompanied by two attendants (the girl Kongara and the boy Seitaka). The figures, flames and a rock base are adorned in polychromy (chemical colours). The inside of the altarpiece is gilded, while the outer side is of red lacquer. Fudō myōō is believed to chase away evil spirits and burn three poisons with his flaming sword: ignorance, rancour and lust. He sometimes has four or six pairs of arms. In a miniature version of a portable altarpiece, the King of Magic was believed to protect the whole family.
