The glaze decorated in enamels and gold suggests the dish is a typical 19th-century Kyōto product imitating older satsumayaki stoneware. It was made in the Satsuma Principality in southern Kyūshū. The dish depicts the feudal prince and fearless warrior Katō Kiyomasa (1562–1611), who is seated on the skin of a tiger that he killed during the Japanese invasion of Korea.
