Lady with a Veil

Josef Navrátil

Josef Navrátil - Lady with a Veil
The painting is one of the most important pictures among Navrátil's private genres. The subject was a young woman lost in thought on a priedieu, possibly a bride before the wedding; actually, the painting used to be known also by the title Bride. The sketchy rendering of the unfinished work is indicative of Navrátil's approach, based on generously handled form and masterful use of the brush. The limited colour range and the use of light only further emphasize this trait. They bespeak the painter's involvement without any cheap sentimentality.
