Nicolaes Berchem is one of the many Dutch artists who journeyed to Italy (1642-1649, 1653-1654?). Their sojourns in the sunny southern land with a different cultural orientation left prominent traces in their work. In Berchem's designs, his experiences from the Italian Peninsula took on the form of idyllic pastoral scenes.
