Model of oblong table decorated with pheasants and trees motif

Miniature models of furniture were mainly used on Dolls’ Day – Hinamatsuri – on March 3, when Japanese households display traditional dolls hina-ningyō in the style of the Japanese imperial court. In this case, the model of the chest is decorated with a pheasant and tree motif; the pheasant is a symbol of elegance and magnificence and, in combination with plant decoration, is a frequent theme in the “the pictures of flowers and birds”, or kachōga, genre.
