Waterfall of the Mumlava River in the Giant Mountains

Josef Navrátil

Josef Navrátil - Waterfall of the Mumlava River in the Giant Mountains
The painter Josef Navrátil holds a special position in the history of Czech fine art. He represents an artist standing at the border of two artistic worlds. He was the first artist in the Czech lands to have achieved the loose painting expression which was close to French realists. As far as themes are concerned, he pursued everydayness and genre topics. But he was also a masterful landscape painter who used a rather conservative style and had a strong feeling for detail that is visible in Waterfall of the Mumlava River in the Giant Mountains. An elegant couple, a man and a woman, are standing at the landmark which is still popular. The scene is further enhanced by the setting sun which adds to the overall romantic atmosphere of the painting.
