Batsheba Pleads with David for Solomon´s Succession

Gerbrand van den Eeckhout

Gerbrand van den Eeckhout - Batsheba Pleads with David for Solomon´s Succession
Eeckhout was one of the most talented and most liked pupils of Rembrandt. The painting describing the scene from the life of King David (1 Kings, 1, 1-34) is one of his early works. The influence of his teacher is obvious in the presentation of the noble milieu and costumes of the figures. The painter perfectly rendered the luxury of the royal bedroom with valuable objects in the forefront. Inventive combinations of colours prove this artist´s exceptional gift for coloration, combined with an ability to vividly represent the rare brocades, jewels or valuable vessels.
