In Chlumecký’s Wine-Cellar

Josef Navrátil

Josef Navrátil - In Chlumecký’s Wine-Cellar
Navrátil was a frequent visitor of Chlumecký's wine cellar in the Old Town - in the picture he painted himself as one of the guests. The painting should not be seen as a realistic document, a thing absolutely contrary to Navrátil's attitude. It is a somewhat stylized scene in the contemporaneous Biedermeier spirit, which owes its impressive vivacity to the painter's personal experience.
