Adolf Kosárek - Summer Country with a Chapel
The motif of one of Kosárek's last paintings was this countryside in the scorching sun of a hot summer day, composed of several landscape views. The shape of the hill in the background reminds us of Ralsko, the Romanesque chapel is reminiscent of the round church of the Holy Cross in Prague (ul. Karolíny Světlé), the rock in the left part of the picture was inspired by Šárka. As may be seen, towards the end Kosárek preferred views he had seen in nature. Equally brilliant and striking with its resolute brushwork is a study, which shows only a part of the rock, a wall with a gate leading to the chapel and branching tree tops beyond the wall. With colour and the contrasts of light and shade Kosárek proved his ability to express mood, the atmosphere of a hot summer day and its quivering air.
