In the early 1920s, Otto Gutfreund began to work on official commissions in a matter-of-fact, easily comprehensible and unpretentious style, which brought him recognition. One of the first was a monument to the Grandma from the novel by Božena Němcová in Ratibořice, which Gutfreund did in tandem with architect Pavel Janák (the monument was officially unveiled in July 1922). The Club of Czechoslovak Tourists pushed to install it in the region where the writer situated her well-known book, a popular tourist destination. The sketch shows the compositional solution of the statuary of the Grandma with her four grandchildren. Dogs were later added to the group of figures.
