Head II (Head - helmet)

Vincenc Makovský

Vincenc Makovský - Head II (Head - helmet)
This early work by Vincenc Makovský was inspired by contemporary European sculpture with which the artist had become familiar while in Paris after graduation in 1926-1930. He was strongly influenced by the elementary sculpture forms of Constantin Brancusi. In his set of abstracted heads, he boldly abandoned the style conventions of Czech sculpture and achieved a maximum reduction of form. Elementary forms and brutalism are typical of variations on the theme of a head shaped like a smooth flattened cone broken by two holes, as well as Makovský’s subsequent avant-garde works.
