In Dutch prints, animals tended to be portrayed with utmost naturalism; quite customary were scenes showing sick or dead animals, or urinating cattle. Here, moreover, the motif forms the focal point of the composition, otherwise a peaceful, idyllic pastoral scene inspired by Italian painting.
