Marcantonio Raimondi - engraver, Raphael - inventor - Virgin with the long thigh
The scene originates from a Raphael’s drawing executed between 1518 and 1519 (and today held in Musée du Louvre). The artist was able to imbue the rendition of The Holy Family with an intimate, lyrical air. Raphael’s interest in Roman relics is clear from the classical ruins in the background of the family scene, as well as from the types of figures, especially the Mother of God. The print received its title from later collectors.
