Self-portrait in a cap and scarf with the dark face

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn - Self-portrait in a cap and scarf with the dark face
The spontaneous and energetic mode of drawing using a needle, heightened by the unusual shadowing of the face elicits emotional depth. Rembrandt experimented repeatedly with the challenging task of portraying faces partly obscured by a shadow; his painted portrait, now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, is a well-known example.
