Marcantonio Raimondi - engraver, Albrecht Dürer - inventor - Christ with the Crown of Thorns
Among the works copied by Raimondi after the famed German artist are scenes from Dürer’s widely popular cycle, The Small Passion. Raimondi, however, transformed these original woodcuts to copper engravings, thus endowing them with more sharpness and contrast as against the subdued colour palette of the first medium. The comparison of this work with the one by Dürer clearly displays Raimondi’s genius in the reproduction graphic arts as well as the different artistic expression of the two techniques. The empty table situated in the left bottom corner is Raimondi's authorship sign, but he also used to sign his engravings with the monogram „MAF“.
