Stefano della Bella - engraver - Polish Horseman
The prints was part of a series of eleven circular depictions of Hungarian, Polish and African horsemen. The etchings are regarded as the most beautiful major works by the artist, fully revealing his virtuoso engraving skills. Stefano probably started working on them in 1648 while still in Paris and completed them after his return to Florence. The Tuscan grand dukes’ collections housed copper plates that were still used in the 18th century for the series of imprints called Quadreria Medicea.
