Marcantonio Raimondi - engraver, Raffael - inventor, Nicolas van Aelst - publisher - Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife
The work depicts an Old Testament scene with Joseph running away from the lustful wiles of Potiphar’s wife. The models serving Raphael here were the frescoes in the Vatican loggias dating to between 1518 and 1519. The engraver, however, again worked from Raphael’s drawing. The name of Nicolas van Aelst, given on the print, gives details about its publisher, who was active in Rome between 1588 and 1612. The work is therefore a later impression, which had already lost the full tonal range of the earlier prints.
