In all probability, Reinier Nooms, called Zeeman (Seaman), had a personal experience with sea voyages - one took him to the coast of North Africa. In this etching, the artist made use of this knowledge to faithfully convey a sense of movement of the sailing boats on a choppy sea. The billowing clouds suggest an impending storm.
