Cityscapes were a frequent subject in the Dutch printmaking in the 17th century. The view from the extensive cycle featuring Amsterdam’s prominent buildings and landmarks depicts the seat of the Dutch East India Company (at the top), founded in 1602, which played a decisive role in the colonization of Asia. The Company’s trading activities greatly enhanced Holland's economic prosperity in the 17th century.
