Cityscapes were a frequent subject in the Dutch printmaking. A view from the extensive cycle featuring Amsterdam’s prominent buildings and landmarks depicts seat of the Dutch West India Company, founded in 1623, which played a decisive role in the colonization of the North American continent. The Company’s trading activities greatly enhanced Holland’s economic prosperity in the 17th century.
