African Horseman

Each horseman is depicted in typical national costume. The inspiration for this series was thus very likely not mediated, but immediate. The engraver, however, did not focus solely on the ethnic characteristics of his figures. As this etching clearly shows, the commander is surrounded by African features. The base of a pyramid can be seen on the left and a caravan depicted in the background features an elephant - Africa’s symbolic animal.
