Federico Zuccari - Desing for the four upper zones of the northwest bay of the cupola in Florence Cathedral
Following Vasari’s death, Zuccari was entrusted with completing the fresco decoration of the Florence cathedral’s dome. Although he respected Borghini’s iconographic concept and Vasari’s designs, the stylistic difference between the older and newer sections is quite evident. Numerous drawings preceded the final execution, with this image being one of the earliest. Attesting to the preliminary design are the Medusa heads that were ultimately not included in the final fresco. The Last Judgment was the iconographic concept of the fresco as a whole. The drawing housed in the National Gallery in Prague portrays male and female saints, together with allegorical figures of Beatitude, Grace and Holiness.
