Portrait of a Fifteen-Year-Old Young Lady

Nicolaes Eliasz Pickenoy

Nicolaes Eliasz Pickenoy - Portrait of a Fifteen-Year-Old Young Lady
Around 1626, Pickenoy was the leading portrait painter in Amsterdam. His Clients appreciated the flattering manner of his painting, with which skin, fabrics and accessories were softly modelled in meticulous detail. The sitter holds magnificent gloves such as those traditionally given to a woman by her future husband as a wedding present. However, this young lady's costume, a black tabbaard with an open skirt and red underskirt, indicates that she is not yet married - but perhaps she is already engaged.
