Marcantonio Raimondi - engraver, Raffael - inventor - David and Goliath
This scene, too, departs from Raphael’s frescoes found in the Vatican loggias - in particular, from the scene in the XIth vault field. The story of the shepherd and the future King of the Jews, David, who, albeit very young and of short stature, overcame the giant Goliath with his wit, has always represented a very popular subject encouraging all the oppressed. The work describes the moment when Goliath has already been defeated and the victorious David beheads him with the giant’s own sword.
