The Flight into Egypt: Crossing a Brook

Rembrandt was much more expressive in his late visual language than in his early art. The etched series of scenes from the life of Jesus to which the present print belongs was done in a rather dy-namic manner. Despite the sketchy style Rembrandt accurately portrayed the deep affection of a mother and child. He would often sketch his wife or other women and children, all of whom are usually depicted in a very tender manner. Still Rembrandt himself suffered much sorrow in his per-sonal life, as his first three children died before three months of age. Only Titus, born on 22 Sep-tember 1641, reached adulthood, but Rembrandt's wife Saskia died shortly after his birth, in June 1642.
