The Circumcision is considered Rembrandt’s first etching and originates from his early Leiden period (1624-1631). The artist drew the figures free and sketch-like on the plate, and his execution is still distinctively draftsman-like. Rembrandt only took up etching upon his return from Amsterdam alongside Jan Lievens, with whom he intensely collaborated and exchanged between 1625 and 1631. However, Rembrandt soon developed his own etching style, corresponding in the early religious scenes to his then precise painterly manner.
