Wenceslaus Hollar - View of Windsor
Wenceslaus Hollar made drawings of the English countryside, towns and important buildings, and therefore could have hardly omitted the royal residence at Windsor. He portrayed the castle several times during his two sojourns in England. This huge castle compound (second after Prague Castle) was founded as a Norman keep, and its building history goes back to the early 11th century. Construction flourished mainly under Tudor rule from the 14th to the 16th century. The Stuart monarchs in the 17th century, when Hollar lived in England, did not intervene much in the outer appearance of the castle.
