Wenceslaus Hollar - View of Greenwich
This panoramic view of Greenwich Park with the castle on the riverbank in the distance and a palace on a hill to the left was created shortly after Hollar arrived in England. The location, now known for its royal observatory that had found its place in the former palace, was probably meant to convey the pleasant atmosphere in London that Hollar had noted after his arrival. This we known from his own later testimony. Originally, this two-part etched plate bore the artist’s dedication to Queen Henrietta Maria, but later he exchanged it for a different text.
