The Ass between the two sheep

Karel Dujardin - engraver - The Ass between the two sheep
Berchem’s pupil Karel Dujardin was another artist who, in 1650, visited Italy. His study sojourn was strongly reflected in his work. This etching is one of the most successful examples of Italianate landscapes by the hand of a Dutch engraver. The sensitively rendered scene is a convincing reinterpretation of the warm, sunny atmosphere of the Mediterranean countryside with its glowing light of the south.
