Jan Lievens - engraver - Bust of an oriental
This impressive depiction of a bust of a man dressed in an Oriental costume is a tronie. It means a depiction of an exaggerated facial expression or a stock character in costume. During his Leiden period (1625-1631), Lievens also produced this type of work in his paintings. This excellent study of the man’s facial expression brings to mind Leonardo da Vinci’s famous grotesque heads known as affetti.
