Johannes van Vliet - The Rat-catcher, z cyklu „Abychom mohli žít, musíme dávat“
Johannes van Vliet, Rembrandt’s collaborator in the years 1628-1637, was strongly inspired by his master’s output, yet his beggar figures are conveyed with a greater degree of satirical expressivity. In the 17th-century Netherlands, rat-catchers came under the same anti-beggary laws as other itinerant individuals; however, in art they were mostly viewed with light-hearted humour, as in the case of this man engrossed in a discussion with rats on a tray.
