Ceramic wares with greenish “celadon” glaze were among the most valued in China. Elegance and a softly-flowing thick layer of glaze are characteristic features of the best celadons, which were sometimes animated using random or deliberate crackles achieved by suddenly cooling the object after firing. To make it more conspicuous, ink was rubbed into the cracks.
