Lot and His Daughters

God decided to ruin two cities for their sins and prodigality - Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19: 1 - 28). Only Lot’s family escaped the ruin for their life was orderly - on their way from the burning Gomorrah, his wife, however, turned and was transformed into a salt pillar, as can be seen in the background of the scene, otherwise filled with the robust figures of Lot and his two daughters. In belief that no one else survived God’s punishment the daughters subsequently resolved to act: “Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him” (Genesis, 19: 31-32). Brandl depicted one of them embracing Lot and handing him a goblet of wine, and the other, barebreasted, holding a jug. The old man’s index finger in the girl’s palm suggests the further development.
