Wenzel Lorenz Reiner - Lanscape with a Waterfall and Fishermen
The airy landscape filled with a silvery mist opens up across the river with a waterfall, deep to the remote horizon with an outline of a city and a mountain range, which almost merges with the high cloudy sky. To create the impression of depth the painter used attractive contrasts of light and shadow, which are also reflected in the colour scheme. The sober harmonious colour scheme is brightened up by several conspicuous accents of figural staffage, albeit almost blending with the terrain. Along with its pendant entitled Rocky Landscape with a Gypsy Camp (Hannover, Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum), this painting ranks among the pinnacles of Reiner’s production of his late stage, in the course of which he replaced the concept of heroic landscape by a more poetic view, at the same time retaining his ability to achieve monumental effects even in intimate formats.
