Jacques de Gheyn II. - engraver, Dirck Barendsz - designer, Claes Jansz Visscher - publisher - Daniel in the Lion’s Den
As a punishment, the prophet Daniel was thrown into a lions’ den. The archangel Michael and the prophet Habakkuk (on the top left) saved his life by bringing him food. The lions left Daniel alone, an event that served as proof of the power of the Jewish God. The distinct manner of engraving fits the grandness of the dramatic religious scene. The engraver’s masterful, subtle execution is evident especially in the background and in the details, such as the angel on the left.
